Going back to your maiden name after divorce
There are two routes, and most people are told about the wrong one first. Here is how to pick, and the exact order to do it in.
Route 1 — decree absolute (free, no deed poll)
Reverting to your birth surname? Your decree absolute / final order plusyour marriage certificate is accepted as evidence by HM Passport Office, DVLA, HMRC and most organisations. Order certified copies of anything you're missing from the court or GRO, then work down the standard order: passport → DVLA (free) → HMRC → GP → electoral roll → banks → employer.
Route 2 — deed poll (still free with our generator)
You need a deed poll if you want a name that is not your birth surname (a brand-new surname, a double-barrelled mix), if you can't produce the decree + marriage certificate pair, or if a stubborn bank insists. Your decree absolute (called a final order since April 2022) together with your marriage certificate is accepted by HM Passport Office, DVLA, HMRC and most organisations as evidence for reverting to your birth surname. A deed poll is needed if you want a DIFFERENT name, if you're missing those documents, or for the occasional bank that insists on one.
- Does divorce change my name automatically?
